Last weekend, husband and I attended an annual rib cook-off that was hosted by the city of Martinez. It is an event that always signals the beginning of summer for us. According to my iPhone, it was 102 degrees out, and I felt every bit of it. Luckily cold beer and snow cones were readily available. There was also a petting zoo with goats, ducks, and alpacas. The five year old in me was very pleased. For the record, I've never met a petting zoo that I didn't like. Oh yeah, there was a lot of food and shopping too.
This year, we decided to buy ribs from the three sponsoring
restaurants rib joints and take them home to conduct a little taste test of our own. Husband and I took turns shooing each other out of the room, and arranging pretty plates for each other to sample (and only the person not tasting knew which was which). In case you are wondering, we each had different winners.
What would a festival be without a little shopping, you ask? I couldn't agree more. Here are a few items we picked up.
This bamboo bowl was handmade in Vietnam. The color is a beautiful dye that will not fade. It will make a gorgeous centerpiece for our dining room table.

I also picked up some cute sunglasses for $5 and a jade bracelet with a hand carved carp on it.
Lastly, we picked up some tasty sauces from local merchant, EJ's Gourmet. I can't wait to try these in some upcoming dishes this summer.
