Things To Do In San Francisco: The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier at the deYoung Museum

The deYoung is the museum of fine art located in Golden Gate Park.  Currently, it has an exhibit starring the works of Jean Paul Gaultier. Aside from designing clothing,  he created furniture, art, and even perfume bottles.  The exhibit was creepy, and it was spectacular (and at times adult themed).  Most of all, it is something you need to see if it comes to a museum in your area.  This is a picture heavy post, and I even found a video to show you exactly how the exhibit was weird and wonderful at the same time.

Disclaimer:  Flash photography was not allowed.  Some of my pictures are a little blurry.

The entrance to the exhibit, with a love note from JPG.

All of the clothing exhibits had mannequins with animated faces projected on them that went with the sounds in the room.  Some of them sang.  Some made weird noises.  Some just chatted and blinked and smiled.

The first exhibit included Jean Paul Gaultier himself.

Here is a quick video I found on YouTube.  You can see how lifelike the mannequins are.  Creepy.

The gown on the back right mannequin was the first that JPG ever created, called Sainte Nitouche (summer 1971).  The white lace gown in front was worn by Kylie Minogue.

This was the first of many times that I stood next to a costume and thought, "so this is how big Kylie Minogue/Madonna/Naomi Campbell is."

Here is a view of the ceiling in front of the same exhibit.  You can see the projectors that project the animated faces on to the mannequins.

This dress took 126 hours to create: Velvet Cassock with Hidden Icon (1997-1998)

Prototype for Ben-Hur sofa, created for Roche Bobois (1992) for the company's 50th anniversary.

Of course, you could sit and watch his fashion shows.

Prototype of leather chest of drawers with integrated vanity (1992)

Prototype for "Stack of Suitcases" chest of drawers with integrated vanity (1992)

Madonna's iconic cone bustiers from her Blonde Ambition Tour (1990).  This is probably the piece that I was most in awe of.

Notice the pregnancy cone bustier in the back left.

Look closely at the picture.  Do you see what I see?  Yep, it is anatomically correct.  I never thought I would have a reason to type the word "vagina" on my blog, but look, this one is beaded.

Naomi Campbell wearing this little number herself.

And this is a different take on it.

Lots of bondage.

Far left: "La Mariée" Wedding gown
The Hussars collection, haute couture fall/winter 2002-2003

Although this dress looks like leopard skin, it is actually hand beaded.  It took 1006 hours to create.

There was a large moving catwalk, which gave you a fantastic 360 degree view of the outfits.

This is another Kylie Minogue tour design.

If you are in the area, this exhibit is definitely something you should see (but leave the kids at home).  Gaultier is a fashion genius, and standing next to his pieces and getting to examine the detail is an amazing experience.  If only I could try one on.

Do you have any favorite pieces?

This looks really interesting - I've always loved displays like this. I would have loved to have seen the recent Titanic exhibition in Las Vegas.

Wow Erin! Absolutely spectacular ... I love this post. This show looks so very interesting and your photos are gorgeous. I think they're better because you couldn't use flash. Thanks so much for showing this!

Hi, I'm Erin. I am living back on the east coast after 15 years out west. Currently readjusting to humidity and mosquitos. I love to take pictures and read fashion magazines.... and to talk about nothing in particular (ok, and my dogs).
