Things To See In The Bay Area: The Bay Bridge

I am a little late in posting about what I did on the Fourth of July, but I was honestly overwhelmed by the amount of photos I took.   Husband and I went out on our friends Mike and Katie's (Matie's) boat.  It was a beautiful day to be in the bay.  We made it almost all the way to Alcatraz before the water got a little too choppy, and we had to head back.  I took so many pictures I had to divide them into two posts. It seems that I get indecisive when it comes to sorting through a shit-ton of pictures.

We spent a lot of our journey heading towards the (in)famous Bay Bridge.  It connects the cities of Oakland and San Francisco and has one of the longest spans in the world. You may remember pictures of it collapsing during the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989.  Work on replacing the span that collapsed started in 2002 and will not be finished until 2013.

If you watch The Bachelor, you saw Ben and Emily climb this bridge.  If you are wondering, it isn't something that the locals actually do.  However, if you visit San Francisco, chances are you will drive over this bridge.  It also makes a picturesque setting for snapping views of the Bay Area.  Here are some of my favorites from the day.

San Francisco in silhouette.

The Bay is very windy, which makes for the perfect place to go sailing.

A very appropriate sail for Independence Day.

Bright red buoy in the Bay

San Francisco in the background.

Going underneath the bridge

View of both spans of the Bay Bridge with Yerba Buena Island in the middle.  The span on the right is the part that collapsed in 1989 and is being replaced.

The new span of the bridge that is being built, right next to the old span that will soon be retired.

Can I just say how lucky you are to live in the Bay area? And how jealous I am that you have easy access to San Francisco, which is one of my favorite cities EVER?

Very nice shots. Now excuse me while I go spend the rest of the evening thinking of SF and sighing ;-)

It always makes me happy when we're driving into the city and we see all the tall buildings and all the lights. It's really magical. To me, that image feels more like San Francisco than the GG bridge.

That first photo is amazing and reminds me, as a resident of Oakland that I must must take the boat over to SF more rather than just driving over!
