The One Where No One Recognizes Lisa Whelchel

I was a child in the 80's.  I grew up wearing acid washed jeans and dancing around to Material Girl.  I had big spiral permed hair (I will have to share some pictures with you one day), and I loved The Facts of Life.  If you are unfamiliar with the series, it is about a group of girls living at a boarding school and dealing with your average teenage angst.  They were much older than I was, and therefore, they were glamorous and worldly in my eyes.  What can I say?  It was a simple time in my life.

Imagine my excitement 20 years later, when I find out that Lisa Whelchel from The Facts of Life was going to compete on one of my current favorite shows, Survivor.  I anxiously tuned in the first night to see how the other contestants would react to having her compete against them.  I figured they would try to get rid of her quickly, thinking that because she was once a tv star, she wouldn't need the million dollar prize the winner of the show receives.

Then something surprising happened.

Almost no one recognized her.

You take the good, you take the bad...

I started to wonder, did the whole generation of 20-somethings that came after mine not grow up watching The Facts of Life reruns?  It hadn't ever occurred to me that this could be possible.  If you did watch, who was your favorite character?  Is there another show that you watched as a child that you think kids growing up today are missing out on?

Just in case you need a refresher, here is the intro to the show.  I dare you not to sing along.

OMG, I loved watching this show in reruns when I was a kid! My favorite character was Jo. I really miss feel-good shows like this. Nowadays, it's all about sex, drama and deception.

I totally know the facts of life but I don't know that I would've recognized her had I watched Survivor. She kinda went from being hot sexy Blair to Midwest mom.

Also, did you happen to see Mindy Cohn when she was on What Not to Wear? I definitely recognized her right when I saw her, but it was unfortunate.
